I live off the grid – without consistent electricity, and this spring I ran into the unique challenge – Continue reading →
Seeds of Change is giving away free seeds for the cost of shipping. Yes, it’s really that easy! I ordered some yesterday, what a great opportunity to try some new varieties and get some seeds stocked up for, well, you know… the Zombie Apocalypse 😉
Well, it’s been a few days since I’ve gotten my chickens and I think it’s a good point to sit down and see how they have affected our life here at home. You see, what you may not realize is that my husband and I are trying to see if perhaps we can have a third child. Something that has been a constant with both my earlier pregnancies is exhaustion – I have very little energy during the first trimester. So naturally, while planning for that event, I come up with a wall because I am the sort of person who always has 3000 projects going on, and I definitely do tend to overload myself.
So today I had to plant my tomato and pepper seeds and I wanted to try out my mini soil blocker. I’m growing by the lunar calendar and so this weekend was my time to plant those first seeds. I have a whole bunch I need to do next week but this was a nice start! I have been so busy with my chicken hutch though that I didn’t even try to get my grow rack set up. So, I did a makeshift mini greenhouse instead. I also had some problems using the mini soil blocker… i remembered having difficulties last year as well.
So I have it on my schedule that today, Saturday and Sunday are days to plant my tomatoes, peppers, and I am going to try to do early watermelons. I am planting by the moon phases as according to the Farmer’s Almanac.
I just have to brag a moment. Not that I DID anything to earn it! My landlord put me in touch with a lovely elderly gentleman who was cleaning out his junk sheds and had a bunch of canning jars he needed to get rid of. I’d say about close to 60-75 quart jars! Then when I was there, he happened to mention he had flowerpots. I perked up so he showed me what he had – THOUSANDS of pots. Apparently he used to start veggies in his greenhouse and sell it on the roadside but stopped and he has tons of these containers, anywhere from seedling size to gallons. I took what I had room for, and he has lots more! I did give him 4 of the apple oatmeal muffins I baked this morning in exchange but he was about as glad to get rid of them as I was to have them!
OK I’ve done it! I’ve made my seed list. I still have to make myself a schedule, but at least I’ve gone through my inventory and decided what I will grow this year. I am going to start a few hot weather plants like melons and stuff for my mom to grow, but mostly this will just be plants I grow here.
Yep, you heard right! So yesterday I guess Mr. Hot Stuff mentioned to the landlord as they were cutting wood that we were thinking about a greenhouse. Yes, we were thinking, though I was kinda thinking “Gosh I hope I can find lots of free windows on Craigslist!” So apparently he had a stash of glass behind one of the workshops.
Whew… I am feeling much better today. Was out of commission for a few days! I’m not at 100% just yet but doing much better. Anyway I’ve been thinking recently about my garden this next year. I’m going to have to put a lot of my plants in big pots or planters because I seriously do not have a good spot to put in an actual garden… and 3 acres, to boot! It is just too wooded. and not enough sun in one place. Although my hubby seems to think I can build a greenhouse… maybe, but with wanting to get rabbits and chickens too, I don’t know where I’d find the time! That and the money! lol
Well it is right about that time of year when I start to get antsy to be out in the soil. I love gardening – I love being able to be out there in the fresh air, I love that it gives me something to do with my kids, and I really just get this incredible rush from seeing the sprouts poke their heads up out of the soil.
