I live off the grid – without consistent electricity, and this spring I ran into the unique challenge – Continue reading →
Seeds of Change is giving away free seeds for the cost of shipping. Yes, it’s really that easy! I ordered some yesterday, what a great opportunity to try some new varieties and get some seeds stocked up for, well, you know… the Zombie Apocalypse 😉
Well, it’s been a few days since I’ve gotten my chickens and I think it’s a good point to sit down and see how they have affected our life here at home. You see, what you may not realize is that my husband and I are trying to see if perhaps we can have a third child. Something that has been a constant with both my earlier pregnancies is exhaustion – I have very little energy during the first trimester. So naturally, while planning for that event, I come up with a wall because I am the sort of person who always has 3000 projects going on, and I definitely do tend to overload myself.
So I have it on my schedule that today, Saturday and Sunday are days to plant my tomatoes, peppers, and I am going to try to do early watermelons. I am planting by the moon phases as according to the Farmer’s Almanac.
I just have to brag a moment. Not that I DID anything to earn it! My landlord put me in touch with a lovely elderly gentleman who was cleaning out his junk sheds and had a bunch of canning jars he needed to get rid of. I’d say about close to 60-75 quart jars! Then when I was there, he happened to mention he had flowerpots. I perked up so he showed me what he had – THOUSANDS of pots. Apparently he used to start veggies in his greenhouse and sell it on the roadside but stopped and he has tons of these containers, anywhere from seedling size to gallons. I took what I had room for, and he has lots more! I did give him 4 of the apple oatmeal muffins I baked this morning in exchange but he was about as glad to get rid of them as I was to have them!
OK I’ve done it! I’ve made my seed list. I still have to make myself a schedule, but at least I’ve gone through my inventory and decided what I will grow this year. I am going to start a few hot weather plants like melons and stuff for my mom to grow, but mostly this will just be plants I grow here.
I forgot to add on that last post that I’m doing an experiment 🙂
Last year I had gotten some heirloom seed potatoes from Ronniger. They were fingerling types, and 2 different varieties.
Oh I almost forgot! I need to do an update.
This year I had promised myself I would get a soil blocker, and so I did. I got two actually, one 2″ and one .75″. I also have put my wonderful designer husband to the task of making me a 4″ size, which he is mostly finished crafting out of PVC pipe. The 4″ size was just too expensive to buy.
So as far as the rest of the weekend, this is mainly the part that I wish I had pics for. Both Saturday and Sunday were absolutely beautiful, no jacket needed sunny days. You know, it’s funny, I think Ballerina Girl remembers gardening with me last year because she just jumped right in helping me.
This morning Mr. Hot Stuff came in all excited and said “Hey come look! Come look! My grass is growing!”
